Pentecost Week Eleven - Crying Out to God

Wednesday: Crying Out to God

When we’re desperate, we cry out—sometimes in fear, sometimes in anger, sometimes in faith. Well, except in baseball - we all know there is no crying in baseball!

The disciples’ cry to Jesus may have been a mix of all three components, but it was enough to get His attention.

Historical Context:
In Jewish culture, crying out to God in times of distress was not only acceptable but expected. The psalms are full of raw, honest cries to God, ranging from praise to lament to desperate pleas.

The phrase “Master, Master” that the disciples use is significant—it reflects an acknowledgment of Jesus’ authority, even in the midst of their fear.

Interestingly, the boat itself adds another layer to the story. Boats in Jewish thought often symbolized the community of believers.

Early Christian art would later depict the Church as a boat, navigating the storms of life together. When the disciples cried out to Jesus, they weren’t just expressing personal fear; they were crying out as a community, seeking salvation together.

Modern Context:
How often do we hesitate to cry out to God because we think we need to have it all together? Modern culture prizes self-reliance, but faith invites us to admit our need for help. The disciples’ cry wasn’t polished or eloquent—it was raw, messy, and real.

What’s stopping you from crying out to God today? Is it pride? Fear that He won’t respond? Remember, God doesn’t require perfection in your prayer; He just wants honesty. Crying out to Him is an act of faith, a declaration that you believe He can and will respond.

Reflection:
Have you been holding back your cries to God? Spend time today in honest prayer, laying your fears, doubts, and hopes before Him. Don’t worry about finding the “right” words—just let your heart speak.

Closing Prayer:
Father, teach me to cry out to You with honesty and faith. Help me to let go of pride and fear, trusting that You hear me when I call. Thank You for being a God who listens and responds. Draw me closer to You today. Amen.
