Pentecost Week Eleven - Trusting God’s Leading

Intro to this Week - "Trusting God in the Storm"

Moving forward I will only be writing from Monday to Friday, and each day will be a bit shorter in content.  I really love writing these posts but....  I have some other tight deadlines I need to meet over the next 4-5 weeks.

Besides - I know you dread my rambling - don't you!!  lol

This week, we’re focusing on Luke 8:22-25, a powerful story that invites us to trust God’s presence and power, even in the midst of life’s chaos.

Here’s the big picture:
  • God’s Leading: Jesus calls us to leave the safety of the shore and step into the unknown, trusting His plan.
  • God’s Presence: Even when it feels like God is silent, He is with us in every storm.
  • God’s Power: With just a word, Jesus calms the storm, revealing His authority and inviting us to greater faith.
This week’s reading plan will guide us through these themes step by step. Each day, we’ll reflect on how this story challenges us to trust in God’s presence, power, and purposes—even when life feels overwhelming. By Friday, these reflections will tie together into a message of faith that you can carry into every storm.

How to Engage:
  • Read today’s scripture in the CMC App. The reading plan is under the Bible icon at the bottom.
  • Come back here to reflect. Share your thoughts in the comments—let’s encourage and learn from each other as we walk through this passage together.

Monday: Trusting God’s Leading

Every journey begins with a step of trust. Jesus’ call to His disciples to cross the lake was more than a physical journey—it was a spiritual invitation to go beyond what they knew. Just as Abram left everything familiar to follow God’s promise, the disciples were being asked to trust Jesus with no guarantees, only faith.

Historical Context:
The Sea of Galilee, also known as Lake Gennesaret or the Kinneret, was central to life in first-century Judea. This freshwater lake, about 13 miles long and 8 miles wide, was fed by the Jordan River and surrounded by hills that created a natural wind tunnel.

The sudden storms that could arise were notorious and feared, even by seasoned fishermen. The lake wasn’t just a body of water; it was a place deeply tied to Jewish identity and faith. In Scripture, water often symbolized chaos and danger, as seen in Genesis 1:2, where God’s Spirit hovered over the watery void, bringing order from chaos.

But Jesus’ suggestion to cross the lake carried even more weight. The “other side” referred to the Decapolis, a region of ten Hellenistic cities where Gentiles lived. For Jews, this was spiritually unclean territory—a place filled with pagan temples, Roman influence, and cultural practices that stood in stark contrast to their own.

By asking His Jewish disciples to cross to the Gentile side, Jesus was challenging their cultural and religious boundaries. The command wasn’t just about crossing water; it was about crossing the invisible barriers of prejudice, fear, and comfort.

Modern Context:
What does it mean for you to trust God’s leading today? Sometimes, His call takes us to unfamiliar places, just as Abram was called to leave his homeland and the disciples were asked to step into the boat. In our modern world, the “other side” might look like stepping out of our comfort zones, letting go of control, or engaging with people who don’t share our beliefs.

The challenge is that faith rarely comes with a full itinerary. Trusting God means believing He sees the whole picture when all we see is the horizon. If you’ve been holding back from saying “yes” to something God is calling you to, consider what’s keeping you on the shore.

Is it fear of failure? Uncertainty? Or perhaps a reluctance to embrace change? Faith doesn’t promise clarity, but it does promise the presence of the One who knows the way forward.

Reflection:
Take a moment to reflect on areas of your life where God may be calling you to trust Him more completely. Is there a decision, relationship, or opportunity He’s asking you to step into? Consider how even a small step of faith can be an act of obedience that leads to greater blessings. What’s one step you can take today to move toward trusting Him more fully?

Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help me to trust You when the path ahead feels uncertain.
Give me the courage to step out in faith, even when I don’t see the whole picture.
Teach me to rely on Your plans and not my own understanding.
Lead me where You want me to go, and give me the strength to follow.
Amen.
