Day 5: A Lamp on a Stand
Ok - your turn to figure out the parable. This time Jesus told the Parable of the Lamp (Luke 8:16-18),
Solving the Parable
One helpful way to interpret this parable is to consider the absurdity of misusing a lamp. Jesus invites us to imagine hiding a lamp under a jar, where it becomes useless, or under a bed, where it might set the house on fire.
These images are intentionally exaggerated to make a point: God’s Word is not meant to be ignored, hidden, or misused—it’s meant to illuminate, guide, and bless.
But there are other ways to approach the parable that can deepen our understanding. For example, think about the source of the light. A lamp doesn’t create its own light; it relies on something else—oil and a spark.
This reminds us that we are not the source of God’s truth but vessels through which His light flows. Our role is to remain connected to Him, the ultimate source of light, so that we can shine brightly for others.
Another helpful way to interpret the parable is to focus on the placement of the lamp. Jesus emphasizes that a lamp is placed on a stand so it can give light to everyone in the house. This suggests intentionality. Where we "place" our lives matters.
Are we positioning ourselves in ways that allow God’s light to shine through us to the people around us? Or are we shrinking back, hiding the light out of fear or distraction?
Finally, consider the effect of the light. Light doesn’t just brighten a room—it transforms it. It reveals what’s hidden in the dark, brings clarity, and creates a sense of safety and hope. When we live as lamps on a stand, allowing God’s truth to shine through us, we have the opportunity to transform the spaces we occupy—not by our own strength but by reflecting the power and presence of God.
Whew - tired yet?
Here is What I think! - Start with the item being discussed
What is it?
In the ancient world, keeping a lamp lit required care and consistency. Oil lamps ran on olive oil, and the flame could only burn brightly if the oil was replenished, the wick was trimmed, and the lamp was positioned properly. This is a picture of our spiritual lives. If we neglect our relationship with God, the light within us begins to flicker.
To keep the flame alive, we must spend time with God daily through prayer, Scripture, worship, and fellowship with other believers. These practices are not “chores” but opportunities to refill our lamps with the oil of God’s presence. The Holy Spirit, often symbolized by oil, is the one who empowers and sustains us. Without Him, our efforts to shine God’s light will falter.
What does it do?
A lamp on a stand doesn’t only benefit the person who placed it there—it provides light for everyone in the room. This reminds us that our faith is not just a private matter but a communal one. When we live with integrity, reflect God’s love, and share His truth, we have the ability to bless and guide the people around us.
What if it's does not work?
What happens when we hide the light? The loss isn’t just personal—it’s communal. When we keep God’s Word to ourselves, we deprive others of the hope, clarity, and transformation His light brings. This parable challenges us to think beyond ourselves and consider how our actions (or inactions) affect the people God has called us to serve.
Living as a lamp on a stand doesn’t mean forcing others to see the light. Light doesn’t coerce; it simply shines. Its presence alone transforms the environment, revealing what was hidden and bringing peace and understanding. In the same way, we are called to reflect God’s truth in such a way that others are naturally drawn to Him.
Now I'm tired...
So, Back to You… Are You Living as a Lamp on a Stand?
This parable isn’t just a call to shine—it’s an invitation to examine how we’re living. Are you actively tending the flame of your faith, keeping it strong and steady? Are you positioning your life in a way that allows God’s light to shine through you? Or have fear, distraction, or complacency caused the flame to grow dim?
The beauty of this parable is that it offers hope. No matter how long the lamp has been hidden, it can always be placed back on the stand. God is ready to replenish your oil, reignite the flame, and use you to bring His light into the world.
Reflection and Prayer
Take a moment to reflect: Are there areas in your life where you’ve hidden the light of God’s truth?
TGIF Prayer
Lord, thank You for the light of Your Word, which reveals truth and guides my steps.
I confess that there are times when I’ve neglected to keep my lamp burning, allowing fear or distraction to dim it.
Please forgive me and fill me with Your Spirit, so I can shine brightly for You.
Teach me to live as a lamp on a stand, reflecting Your truth and love to everyone around me. May my life bring clarity, hope, and encouragement to others, for Your glory.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
