DAY 3 — Stay Awake
Scripture: Matthew 24:42–44
In early 1980, Mount St. Helens showed signs of instability. Small earthquakes shook the region, but many experts downplayed the danger. Volcanologist David Johnston, however, kept a careful watch. He had studied volcanoes long enough to recognize that the mountain was changing rapidly.
On the morning of May 18, while observing from a nearby ridge, Johnston saw the north side of the mountain bulge outward at an alarming speed. Realizing the eruption was imminent, he radioed his team with a final message: “Vancouver! Vancouver! This is it!”
Seconds later, the volcano exploded, sending ash miles into the air and flattening forests. Johnston died in the blast, but his alertness saved countless lives. His warning gave emergency teams the time they needed to respond.
Reflection:
Jesus’ call to “stay awake” isn’t about fear — it’s about love. It’s about attentiveness to God’s presence and readiness to respond to His movement.
Advent reminds us that God is always at work, even when we are tired or distracted.
Where might God be inviting you to be spiritually awake in a way you haven’t been recently?
Prayer:
Lord, awaken my heart to notice Your presence in my daily life.
Help me stay attentive, aware, and ready for Your voice.
Amen.
I hope you are finding these daily shorter devotionals helpful.
