Advent 2025 - Day 1 - God Lifts What We Cannot Lift

Welcome to the Advent Blog.  This will be a daily (25 days) journey through the scripture that calls us into an expectant anticipation of Hope, Faith, Peace, Joy and Love.

Each day will be short - some scripture from the reading (Bible) plan and a short, but true, story that I found.   I hope you enjoy these four weeks.

DAY 1 — God Lifts What We Cannot Lift
Scripture: Isaiah 2:2–5

On the night of November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall began to fall — not because of a calculated diplomatic decision, but because of a simple mistake. An East German spokesman misread a note on live television, stating that citizens could cross the border “effective immediately.” Within minutes, thousands of East Berliners rushed to the checkpoints demanding to be let through.

Confused border guards radioed for clarification, but none came. The crowds swelled — families long separated, students still in coats from class, older citizens who had given up hope of ever crossing that wall in their lifetime. The guards, overwhelmed but recognizing that the people were peaceful, finally opened the gates.

As the first wave of people crossed into West Berlin, the city erupted into celebration. Strangers embraced. Some climbed onto the wall itself, chipping off pieces as souvenirs. A German pastor standing nearby said, “It was as if a stone God Himself removed from the chest of a nation. Something impossible became possible in one hour.”

The physical wall still stood that night, but spiritually and politically, it had been shattered. A burden no human strategy could lift was suddenly, miraculously moved.

Reflection:
Isaiah speaks into a world full of barriers — political, personal, spiritual — and proclaims that God will raise His mountain, establish His presence, and draw nations toward Him. He tells us that God can move what we cannot move.

Much of Advent is learning to hope again — to lift our eyes from the walls in front of us to the God who makes mountains of hope rise higher than every obstacle.

Where do you need to trust that God can remove a wall you have no power to move on your own?

Prayer:
Lord God of hope, You know the walls that stand in my life — the ones I built and the ones that were built around me.
Lift what I cannot lift, move what I cannot move, and lead me toward Your mountain of hope.
Amen.
